In 2017, the Board voted to rename our Summer Cup the O’Connell Cup in honor of our longtime friend and dedicated member, Jo O’Connell
Jo joined the Captains Golf Course in 1990 with clubs in hand but little playing experience. In 1992, she became a member of the CGC Nine Hole Women’s Association and was immediately asked to serve on the Publicity Committee. From that point through 2017, Jo served continuously on the CGC 9-Hole Board in a variety of roles, including Social, Pairings, Tournaments, and Rules Committees, eventually serving as President from 1998–1999. She especially loved organizing the 9-Hole League Championship, which she won in 1996 and again in 2000
When Jo won the Summer Cup in 1995, her husband, Ed, presented bouquets of flowers to both Jo and the runner-up. Jo and Ed continued this thoughtful tradition for many years, and after Ed’s passing, Jo proudly carried it on through 2019. Although Jo has since passed away, we continue presenting bouquets to the winner and runner-up in her memory
Jo was a passionate advocate for both the golf course and the Women’s Association. She was instrumental in securing access to both courses for Thursday back-nine play for the 9-holers. She never missed an opportunity to promote the course and the Women’s group to anyone willing to listen. Above all, she was a wonderful mentor and friend
In 1999, Jo was appointed to the Golf Commission, where she served diligently for eleven years. She was a positive force for new ideas and improvements to the club. From the beginning, she managed the Suggestion Box and firmly believed that every question deserved a response. Jo was also the Commission’s star recruiter, successfully encouraging both 9- and 18-hole women golfers to participate in the club’s charitable and special events. As if that were not enough, Jo was also a founding member of the Friends of Captains
