In 2017 the board voted to change the name of our Summer Cup to the O’Connell Cup to honor our long standing and hard working Friend.
Jo joined the Captains Golf Course in 1990. She had clubs but no playing experience. She joined the CGC Nine Hole Women’s Association in 1992. As soon as she joined she was asked to serve on the publicity committee. From than till 2017 she has continually served on the Nine hole board. Including Social, Pairings eventually President in 1998-99 and for years on the Tournaments and Rules committee. She loved running the 9 Hole League Championship.
When Jo won the Summer Cup in 1995 her husband Ed brought her and the runner up a bouquet of flowers. Since that time Ed and Jo continued to bring flowers for the Summer cup winners. Even though Ed is no longer with us, Jo provided the flowers for this years winners (2019). She also won the League Championship in 1996 and 2000.
Jo has always been an advocate for the golf course and the Women’s association. She was the driving force for getting the 9 holers to have both courses for our back 9 play on Thursday. She never missed an opportunity to talk about the course or the Women’s group to anyone who would listen. Above all she was a wonderful mentor.
In 1999 Jo was appointed to the Golf Commission and worked diligently for eleven years. She was always a positive force for new ideas to better the club. From the very beginning she handled the Suggestion box and was adamant that every question asked deserved an answer. Jo was the Commissions star recruiter, always able to involve both the 9 and 18 Hole women golfers in the club’s charitable and special events. Because of her enthusiasm you found that giving your time was so worth while.
And if that wasn’t enough She is also a founding member of the Friends of Captains.
